Pixel Gladiator – Review

Info

Published by : Xitilon

Developed by: Flying Islands Team

Available on all platforms now – reviewed on PS4, a code was very kindly supplied for the purpose of this review.

Overview

Here’s the official blurb on the game :

Brutal gladiatorial battles is a top-rated show, extremely popular all over the Universe. You’ve been sent to the abandoned planet as one of the participants of the show. Your goal is to survive as long as possible, fighting back deadly creatures in the focus of billions of viewers. Kill your enemies to earn the money for weapons and upgrades. You are funded by your audience, so you have to keep yourself admired by slaughtering the monsters. Take the challenge and come out victorious from a blood bath with ferocious beasts! Become a champion of the show, full of blood, pain and insensate cruelty.

Gameplay

If you like your zombie horde games or something with a retro vibe you’ve certainly come to the write place, Pixel Gladiator is a non stop action packed slug fest where the aim is to merely survive to gain more points to rise up the leaderboard. While you jump into the action there are a few modes to choose from (which are basically the same) you have survival – it is what it is – and then the choice of 3 arenas each with a different look and feel to it but pretty much the same gameplay whichever mode you choose.

The controls do seem a bit clumsy and a bit difficult to get your head around as they’re not your normal movement controls, but once you do get used to them it becomes pretty straight forward. As you earn credits after each round you can purchase better defences and bigger and better weapons.

As the game moves on, pretty much like any other horde style game the enemies get bigger and harder as you get on with the rewards being greater the longer you last.

Graphics and Sound

The name of the game kind of gives the style away PIXEL GLADIATOR, yes it’s a pixelated retro side scrolling blood bath. The graphics work well in a nostalgic viewpoint.

The chip tune sound track really adds to the nostalgic vibe bringing back memories of the good old platformers.

Summary

My thoughts on Pixel Gladiator, it’s certainly not the best 2d shooter I’ve ever played but certainly not the worst,it is a lot of fun but dies get repetitive quickly, it’s certainly a game I would recommend having a go of.

Verdict – out of 5⭐️

I give Pixel Gladiator 3⭐️ it’s not the worst game in the world by a long stretch, it’s a game that will keep you entertained for a while.

Leisure Suit Larry : Wet Dreams Don’t Dry – Review

Info

Published by : Assemble Entertainment

Developed by : CrazyBunch

Platforms Available On : Xbox One, PS4, Nintendo Switch, Steam and mobile devices – Reviewed on Xbox One

Code very kindly supplied for the purpose of this review

Overview

Hapless stud Larry Laffer is back in the 21st century bringing with him his unique brand of womanising, or more a case of trying to be one. Larry has lost 30 years somewhere and feels lost in modern society.

Lead the legendary cartoon crooner into the world of online dating as he tried his upmost to win the heart of his latest true love Faith.

Help Larry get to grips with modern technology and social media to win his dream woman’s heart.

Gameplay

Being a fan of the Leisure Suit Larry franchise from the early days I was more than excited to channel my inner immaturity one more time.

A slightly different opening to any game I’ve come across, you have to put in your age as there are lots and I mean LOTS of adult themes, not only that you have to prove your age by completing a mini quiz, actually a bit of tongue in cheek fun.

This game isn’t really for anyone with no sense of humour as it is full of childish gags aplenty, plenty of toilet humour and one line innuendos that will get you giving out childish giggles in no time at all. For example one of the missions is to get a pair of used panties and soft toilet for the piphone geeks, yep it’s that type of game and I love it

In this point and click adventure it is like you are controlling a live cartoon as the gameplay and cutscenes blend seamlessly giving an overall fluid gaming experience.

Giving the Larry story a kind of Austin Powers story was a genius stroke and helping Larry through the story using various modern technology and apps is just hilarious, you can lose yourself for a few hours in the game or simply pick up and put down for a quick fix it’s really up to you.

The seedy characters you come across in the game really add a lot to the story telling, I think it’s great how unlike other point and click games that have just the subtitles each choice is played out in front of you giving you the full control.

As I played through the game I got more and more into it and enjoyed the constant giggles. You kind of feel for Larry and his hapless ways and really want to route for him although deep down inside you know he is a seedy loser.

Graphics and Sounds

The developers have kept with the cartoon style that Larry fans will know and love and it works a treat, all the areas you guide Larry through are very well put together and add to the great storytelling.

Larry has a great soundtrack really adds to the seedy vibe, the voice acting is spot on and a breath of fresh air to have a point and click game using voice actors.

Summary

Well let’s summarise my thoughts on Leisure Suit Larry, I love the game and can’t really find any faults to mark it down with, it’s a great addition to the long running franchise and also a great introduction to anyone unfamiliar with the series.

Verdict – Out of 5⭐️

Just incase you haven’t guessed I give Leisure Suit Larry – Wet Dreams Don’t Dry a solid top marks 5⭐️

If you are looking to buy a fun game then you definitely need to get this in your collection pronto.

Air Missions: HIND – Review

Info

Published by : 3Division

Developed by: Grindstone

Platforms Available on : PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and Steam – Reviewed on Nintendo Switch

Code very kindly supplied for the purpose of this review.

Overview

Air Missions: HIND is action combat flight simulator based on the Russian Mi-24 Hind assault helicopter, also known as the “Flying Tank”. Equip the weapon of your choice! UPK 23 machineguns, GUV gunpods, FAB bombs, and variety of missiles. Use those weapons to tear up the sky in single player and multiplayer modes. Three control modes for casual and experienced players. Fifteen missions based on fictional conflicts. There are four different environments – Central Asia, Eastern Europe, Arctic Ocean and Southeast Asia. Singleplayer and Multiplayer mode, including Campaign missions, Deathmatch, Instant Action, and Online co-operative missions. Another three soviet helicopters available to fly in missions or multiplayer battles.

Gameplay

As soon as you load up HIND the dramatic looking still and music kind of give you the idea you are going to be playing an action packed game. If you are unfamiliar with simulation titles especially flight sims then you are probably best to go into tutorial mode firstly just to get to grips with the handling of the helicopter, as if you are not confident with movement and fighting at once you will struggle through the missions.

Now I love everything war related historical and modern so I was kind of excited to get hold of this title but the controls do kind of let down the gameplay as it is difficult to maneuver the HIND and engage in combat, a few times I saw myself slamming into a cliffside or end up entangled in the foliage and end up in a ball of flames.

I jumped into the story missions and enjoyed the action play out, taking out various bad guys as you go with your onboard weapons, the different views available give you a more in-depth feel to the game, the detail in cockpit mode is high level and brings a more authentic feel to the gameplay. With fifteen missions available you definitely won’t be having a quick game of story mode with HIND

I personally liked going for the instant action modes which gives you the chance to jump in different map worlds with different challenges to complete and different missions, also it’s more of a pick up and put down gameplay which definitely suits the Nintendo Switch model as you could easily have a couple of games on the go.

Unfortunately at the time of reviewing I wasn’t able to have any games of online multiplayer as I couldn’t get any games to jump into which was very disappointing.

Graphics and Sound

I found the graphics of HIND slightly dated and blocky which in this age is disappointing but the gameplay more than makes up for it.

The sounds are pretty good, all the sound effects are there and sound as they should and coupled with a decent soundtrack.

Summary

To summarise my thoughts on HIND, the gameplay is there although it is slightly hard but not off putting and worth ploughing on to get better at the game. The graphics do let it down slightly but again doesn’t put me off getting into it as it runs well on Nintendo Switch’s handheld mode. I would recommend getting it in your collection if you like your war games but not as a replacement for some of the better known titles it’s more a decent addition.

Verdict – Out of 5⭐️

I give Air Missions : HIND – 3⭐️ as it is a decent game but the graphics do let it down slightly

You can pick your copy of Air Missions:HIND on Nintendo Switch here :

Drift 21 – Early Access Review

Info

Developed by: ECC Games

Published by: 505 Games

Available on Steam Early Access program now priced at £24.99

A code was very kindly supplied for the purpose of this review.

Overview

Drift 21 is a fully immersive drifting simulation with real licensed cars and tracks featuring different drifting styles, power drift, handbrake and clutch kick. Build your dream drift car, change parts, boost performance and show your skills on Japan’s legendary EBISU circuits.

Gameplay

If you love the roar of engines and the smell of burning rubber then you’re probably in the right place as this is a driving simulation with a bit of boost behind it.

If you’ve ever played a racing game before then you’ll probably be quite used to the controls as there isn’t much difference here, unfortunately the controls aren’t great and you’ll find the cars aren’t the best at handling, but as this is still in early access you would expect something like this to improve given time.

One saving grace of Drift 21 is the customisation options, you can literally build your own car from scratch and make it completely unique to you, so for any budding modder or boy racer this is definitely a game you need to check out. There is a good selection of cars to choose from, you get to choose from big names such as Nissan and BMW etc but the choice isn’t as varied as other simulation games such as Forza but to be fair if your are after that I would say pick up Forza Drift 21 focuses more on the customisation and drifting. You do get a good selection of EBISU tracks to throw your sideways around and it certainly isn’t the worse view to have as you go round.

Graphics and Sounds

Slight disappointment on the graphics front is that with this being the gen of top quality graphics Drift 21 isn’t quite up to the mark you would expect and at times comes across quite clunky. Sounds are also not of a great quality with it not quite clicking with me and getting me feeling immersed in the experience.

Summary

I did find Drift 21 a slight disappointment as it doesn’t quite match up to other simulation games out there but the customisation would be a saving grace for me and something I would quite happily pump hours into. I would recommend you take a look at Drift 21 if you get the chance and maybe the further we go into the early access improvements will be made and make an altogether better game.

Verdict – out of 5⭐️

I give Drift 21 3 ⭐️, it’s not the worse driving game I’ve played but not quite up to the standard of the best.

Re:Turn One Way Trip – Early Access Preview

Info

Developed by : Red Ego Games

Published by : Green Man Gaming

Available on Steam 14th October

We were very kindly given an early access code for the purpose of this preview

Story

To explain the story a bit better here is the official blurb for you :

Re:Turn – One Way Trip is a 2D side-scrolling puzzle-adventure horror game. Trapped in a ghostly train, Saki must search the past and present to find and save her friends. More importantly, Saki must use her wits if she is to survive against an unspeakable evil hellbent on avenging unrequited love

Gameplay

Think of Re:Turn as a platformer with a difference, as you will have aspects of adventure mixed with horror with a traditional 2D platform mechanics then that’s pretty much the bundle.

Straight away as you start the game you get the feeling you’re in for a bit of an eerie ride as you’re in a woods with the lighting not great so it kinda of sets the mood a bit. You get a mixture of gameplay and manga style stills to tell the story and it works to be fair and it all seems to flow into one another effectively

The gameplay is immersive with atmosphere and the in depth story you really feel yourself getting sucked in to the game, by the look of it it’s not a game you can just have a quick on, you can easily loose hours in one hit.

Overall so far from what I’ve seen it’s a deep and dark platform story with plenty of jump scares, oh and one personal tip – probably not the best idea to play it in bed in the dark !!!!

Summary

Well to summarise my thoughts so far on Re:Turn, it certainly does what it says on the tin, horror platform, slightly cliche story of college kids go off on a break in the woods pretty standard horror fayre really, but overall I like what saw and look forward to to the full release in mid October

Peaky Blinders Mastermind – Review

Info

Published by: Curve Digital

Developed by: Futurlab

Platforms Available On: PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC. Reviewed on PS4 – code very kindly supplied for the purpose of this review.

Overview

Peaky Blinders: Mastermind is a puzzle-adventure game, based on the multi-award-winning TV show. Become the Mastermind as you control key characters and pull off perfectly synchronized plans.

Now straight away as a fan of the show I’m full of anticipation that this will be a game worthy of the show, read on to see if it indeed was.

Gameplay

The general style of Peaky Blinders:Mastermind is a cross between birds eye strategy gameplay and cartoon style still cutscenes with written story telling. Firstly I liked the look of the game with it being a bit different to what I expected the game to look like, I was expecting more like a GTA type look to it, but with the birdseye view lending itself well to strategy games it was indeed a good choic to go for.

You get to take control of the main characters from the show such as Tommy and Arthur along with Ada and young boy Finn, all of which you need to complete tasks as different characters come with different skill sets and you will be using more than one character at a time to complete missions. At first the whole rewind time thing was a bit of strange concept to get my head around but once you do it really does work, well for instance send Ada to distract a guard for a few minutes then rewind once you hit play you can then leave Ada talking to the guard and switch to Tommy and walk straight past the guard very clever mechanics if you ask me.

You also get to use other AI characters throughout the game who are willing to help The Peaky Blinders and you use them in the same way you would the other characters.

Every level you play is timed with you having a target time to reach to complete goals gold silver and bronze level, personally I found this a bit difficult and just about got bronze level but this didn’t impact the enjoyment from the game

Being a fan of the series it was good to play the game and build a bit of back story to the characters.

Graphics and Sounds

I found the graphics surprisingly good, all the levels were well built up and it actually looked like you were playing the show. I liked the graphic style of the still cut scenes telling the story and adding drama to the game.

With the sounds in game is ok you get the sound effects you would expect from the background my only disappointment was that in the cut scenes there are no voice acting which would’ve added a bit more to it for me.

Summary

To summarise my thoughts on Peaky Blinders:Mastermind, I personally enjoyed it I have seen varied comments online good and bad about the game but I personally enjoyed playing through, it’s not perfect but it’s well worth having a play through.

Verdict – out of 5⭐️

I give Peaky Blinders : Mastermind 3.5⭐️ I did enjoy playing it, there are some things I felt it was missing to make it perfect but I rarely do find a “perfect” game. Definitely worth giving it a go if you’re a fan of the series.
